Alfrida Willke

MINSTER -- Alfrieda E. Willke, 83, 1986 Rolfes Road, Maria Stein, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, January 5, 1990, at her residence following an illness of one week.

She was born February 4, 1906, in St. Rose, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kremer) Kleinhenz. On July 21, 1931, in St. Marys she married Edgar J. Willke, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Marilyn) Schweiterman, Maria Stein, Janet Niekamp, Kettering, and Mrs. Robert (Roseann) Spitzer, Lafayette, Ind.; a son, William, Dayton; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Hilda Creeden, Centerville, and Mrs. Esther Stroh, St. Marys.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Mrs. Willke was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Maria Stein, and the Ladies Sodality of the church.

She was a charter member of the Knights of St. John Auxiliary, a member of the Mercer County Medical Auxiliary, a charter member of the Maria Stein Retreat League and a member of the Mercer County Elks Society.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. John Behen. Burial was followed in the church cemetery.

Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster were in charge of arrangements.

Arnold Kleinhenz

Arnold F. Kleinhez, 81, 159 Guernsey Ave., Columbus, Ohio died Wednesday, January 3, 1990 at Mt. Carmel Hospital, of an apparent heart attack.

He was born on November 17 in St. Rose to John and Elizabeth (Kremer) Kleinhenz. He was married May 12, 1937 to Alvina Burns in St. Nicholas Church, Osgood, Ohio who survives.

Also surviving are two sons Kenneth and William both of Columbus, Ohio. Also surviving are two sisters Hilda Creeden of Centerville, and Mrs. Esther Stroh, St. Marys, 7 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was infant son, David, four bothers, and three sisters.

He was a veteran of World War II and served over seas in the Civil Engineer Corps. After the war he was Civil Engineer for the Federal Government Soil conservation Services until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary Magadelens Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2898 Veteran of Foreign War II.

Services were held on Saturday January 6, 1990 at 10 a.m. at St. Marys Magadlene Catholic church, 473 St. Roys Ave. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.

At the still youthful age of 38 years, 3 months and 29 days, on Tuesday afternoon, the 18th of February at 3:50 p.m., Mrs. Elisabeth Kleinhenz gave up her spirit and passed into the sweet sleep from which she will never again awaken. Surrounded by her husband and nine children, as well as other close relatives, she was provided with the last consolations of her holy religion and then gave up her spirit. Such a sad case is almost heart-rending, but the Almighty rules, and the mourners must willingly bear their suffering.

The deceased fell ill about a week earlier, and her illness was so severe that she grew weaker every day and was no longer able to bear her suffering any longer.

The departed first saw the light of the world on October 19, 1874, as the daughter of Mr. Frank Kremer of Maria Stein, where she was raised on a farm and received her schooling in the public schools of that place. When she had reached her 21st year she entered into the state of matrimony on November 6, 1895, with Mr. John W. Kleinhenz, and the couple settled on the farm of Mr. Kleinhenz in St. Rosa, where she resided until the present day. She was a good and upright housewife and strove to raise her children according to the commandments of God. As a wife she stood by her husband on every occasion and thus led a joyful married life in the circle of her family.

The deceased leaves behind her husband, John W. Kleinhenz; sons Raymond, Leander, Alfred and Arnold; daughters Olivia, Hilda, Alfrida, Pauline and Edna; her father, Frank Kremer, Sr., of Maria Stein; five brothers—John of Maria Stein, Anthony of Carthage, Hugo of Schohgan/Norwood, August of Maria Stein, and Frank Kremer Jr. of Chicago; two sisters—Katherine Goers of Carthage and Anna Meiring of Maria Stein; brothers-in-law Anton Kleinhenz; sisters-in-law Maria Ried of Maria Stein, Regina Meyer of Minster, and Winnie Kleinhenz of St. Rosa.

She was a member of the Marian Society of the St. Rosa parish, whose members took part in the solemn funeral procession to the grave.

The burial took place on Friday at 8:30 in the morning with numerous attendance, preceded by a Requiem Mass in St. Rosa Church, at the Catholic cemetery in St. Rosa.

May she rest in peace!

Alfrida (Kleinhenz) Willke, Olive's younger sister, writes: When Olive married George in 1920 she had moved in with George's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Thieman. My association with grandpa and grandma Thieman that summer left many nice memories. Grandpa at 80 and grandma at 74 were still very keen and up-to-date. They loved and were interested in young people. So our love for each other was mutual.

Grandma Thieman usually would sit down with me the morning after I had been out the night before, wanting to know all about my evening out. Then she had some tales to tell me about her teenage days. One of her favorite sayings I found to be very true - "One never stands still; one either goes forward or backward."

Ben and Anna Buddendick Tuente were natives of Westfalen, Germany. Catherine Tuente was born at St. Patrick, Ohio, on August 1, 1889. They were the parents of two children.

John W. Kleinhenz and Elizabeth Kremer on the wedding day. They were married on November 6, 1895, at St. John Catholic Church, Maria Stein, Ohio. To this union 10 children were born, all at St. Rose, Mercer County, Ohio. Elizabeth Kremer is the daughter of Frank and Mary Seitz Kremer. She was born on the Kremer farm where her grandparents and great grandparents had lived in Maria Stein, Ohio, on October 19, 1874.

Kleinhenz, of this city, and Miss Helen Russell, of Worthington, were married at 8 o’clock this morning at the St. Gerard Catholic church, in Lima, with the Rev. Patrick Murphy officiating. The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Arnold, who is a student at Ohio State university. Miss Lucille Link, of Monroeville, also a student at Ohio State university, acted as bridesmaid.

The bride’s gown was of white satin and her veil was of tulle. She carried an arm bouquet of roses and baby breath. Her bridesmaid wore a gown of green crepe with a hat of harmonizing color. She also carried an arm bouquet of roses and baby breath.

Among those to witness the beautiful ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. John Kleinhenz, Ray Kleinhenz, Miss Elfreda Kleinhenz, Miss Pauline Kleinhenz, Miss Esther Kleinhenz, Edwin Kleinhenz, of St. Marys; George Thieman, of Minster; Rev. Sebastine Cramer, of Cleveland, an uncle of the bridegroom, Mr. and Mrs. Wiemer and Mrs. Cole, of Worthington, Mrs. Calahan, of Lima.

Following the nuptials, the bridal party and a group of relatives and close friends went to the Hotel Argonne, where a wedding breakfast was served.

During the afternoon Dr. and Mrs. Kleinhenz left on a wedding trip to New York City, and on their return will live in Lima.

The bride is a daughter of Frank Russell, of Worthington. She is a graduate of Ohio State university and for the last year she has been a teacher of home economics at the high school in Wauseon.

The bridegroom is a graduate of the medical college at Ohio State university and is now serving an internship at the St. Rita’s hospital in Lima.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Kleinhenz have many friends who are extending best wishes and congratulations to them.

Family #1 is Joseph Kleinhenz.

St. Rose Church, Ohio. Built in 1853. This is the second church in St. Rose. It stood behind the present church and faced west. The first church, made of logs, was built in 1844, and it stood across the street from the present one.

St. Rose Church under construction. 1911. Alfrida (Kleinhenz) Willke writes: This picture brings back many happy memories. I used to take milk daily to the priest house. We lived across the street from the church. I can remember the church being built. As a 7-year-old, I sat on the front porch of our farmhouse and watched the construction in awe.

January 1910: The need for a new, larger church was formally presented to the congregation.

1910: Construction of the third and present church began.

1911: Construction was completed.

Cost: approximately $26,479.

The high altar was added in 1913, with additional altar work purchased in 1920.

Before the first church was constructed, mass in St. Rose was held in the home of Joseph Kleinhenz, who immigrated from Bavaria, Germany.

In 1837, Joseph Kleinhenz and his wife Mary Meiner bought 80 acres of uncultivated land from the U.S. Government. This land is located directly across the street from St. Rose Catholic Church.

Joseph Kleinhenz sold several acres of land to Bishop Purcell, which were used to build the first Catholic Church in 1844, a log church, in St. Rose. Joseph Kleinhenz and family are listed as family #1 in the Parish Record of Families - 1846.

Joseph Kleinhenz is my 3x great-grandfather. He is buried in St. Rose Cemetery.

This undated, uncaptioned photo was found in the records of Bill and Esther Willke. It was taken in front of St. Rose Church in St. Rose, Ohio. The children appear to be the students from the one-room schoolhouse next to the church. There is handwriting on the photo that says "Mader Fer". Standard Chain Company factory fire in St Marys, Ohio. July 21, 1906. John W. Kleinhenz would buy this building in 1924 and turn it into the Kleinhenz Union Stockyards.

**STANDARD CHAIN COMPANY**

On Saturday, July 21, a very disastrous fire occurred at the plant of the Standard Chain Company, located at St. Mary's, Ohio. A large brick forge shop was entirely destroyed, together with several other buildings. The engine, boiler and polishing house, as well as the warehouse containing finished stock, were not damaged. As the company operates a number of other plants in various cities some of the St. Mary's Chain makers were transferred to the Braddock plant at Pittsburgh, Pa., and others to the plant at Marion, Ind. A vacant machine shop at St. Mary's was leased by the company and equipped with the necessary machinery transferred from other factories, and within one week from the time of the fire the new plant was in operation, working double turn. Owing to the other plants of the company being so well equipped with reserve machinery and its prompt action in transferring it no serious interruption occurred in the production of Chain or in shipments to customers. As soon as the insurance loss is adjusted the plant will be rebuilt on an enlarged scale.
